San Mercurio is the Patron of Toro and, during his life, was a soldier and a martyr of the 3rd century.
The Church celebrates him on the 25th November.
The historical fonts tell that in 663 Costanzo, Byzantine emperor, came to Italy to fight against the Longbards, bringing with him the bodies of several saints in order to win.
During the expedition, he besieged Benevento without any success, and he had to leave the holy relics of San Mercurio at Quintodecimo (Avellino).
One hundred and five years later, the 26th of August 768, Arechi II transported the body of the martyr at Benevento and entombed him in the Santa Sofia.

It's not clear when San Mercurio became the Patron of Toro but his cult is really vivid among the population: in fact, one church was is dedicated to him.
Besides, there's a beautiful 18th century painting of San Mercurio who knocked down Julian the Apostate and a statue, recently restored with disputable results.
