One of the most
characteristic traditions of Toro is the Convito di San Giuseppe (banquet
of Saint Joseph), that takes place on the Sunday closer to 19th March.
Originally, as it is reported in historical documents, the convito was
organized by some families in order to make poor people live a special
day, eating and enjoying themselves without thinking of their situation of
need.
So, the table was laid with dishes like beans, macaroni with anchovies,
baccalà arracanato (stockfish cooked in the oven and covered with the soft
part the bread and tomato), just to name some of them.
A particular mention must be deserved to the cavezune, a sort of
sfogliatelle, filled with chick-peas cream and honey.
On the other hand, nowadays this tradition lost its primary aim (giving
hospitality to poor people), and became an occasion for families and
friends to stay together.
The days before the Convito are characterized from the religious rituals
of repentance and expiation: so, the males of the town go to the Church to
absolve the obligation of the duties, in a suggestive ceremony just for
them.
